Position Overview

The Cyber Operations Intern for the Joint Cyber Training Enterprise (JCTE) will need to rapidly learn and gain subject matter expertise for help desk operations, range operations, and apply technical background to further understanding of how JCTE supports the Joint Force. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow into this junior role and learn cyber range design, implementation, validation, and execution. The candidate will provide technical expertise across a broad spectrum of IT and cybersecurity products, tools, architectures, and implementations, with the ability to use that expertise to design and implement cyber ranges. Also, the candidate must support individual training, large scale collective training and address operational mission rehearsal requirements for the Cyber National Mission Forces (CNMF), at USCC. The candidate will work closely with customer and third-party organizations and must be able to respond to ad-hoc technical requirements while synchronizing priorities across the enterprise. The candidate must thrive in high pressure situations.

 

The position is part-time, on-site in Fort Meade, MD.

Responsibilities

These activities will occur over time and as experience is gained. It is not expected that the candidate will have expertise across this broad set of job functions at the start of employment. 

 

General

  • Operate in a virtualized and cloud based environment
    • Utilize VMWare tools to manage connections to virtual hosts and analyze resource utilization
    • Access virtual VM and/or cloud hosts to execute commands, perform analyses, and retrieve files
  • Operate in a predominately Linux environment
    • Basic CLI proficiency
    • Execute and maintain Linux compatible scripts
  • Independently execute technical tasking
    • Maintain progress metric
    • Report status on regular intervals
  • Author and maintain technical documentation
  • Perform trade studies to compare Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) options for a technical solution that best fits program needs. 
  • Evaluate and document cybersecurity vulnerabilities
  • Evaluate and implement DISA STIGs
  • Support the patching and analysis of physical and virtualized hosts
  • Write and manage automation scripts in varying languages

Range Operations

  • Provide direct support to JCTE subject matter experts on architecture, authentication and system securityDrive continuous process improvement across all event activities. Expert-level IT, virtual environment, and network support functions. Must be a self-starter in a fast-paced environment and able to work with a range of engineers holding a diverse set of skills at differing levels of experience. Effective written and oral communication with multiple levels of leadership involving both business and technical sides of the business. Be sensitive and flexible to the needs and requirements of the customer.
  • Configuration, management and monitoring of on prem and cloud based IT infrastructure
    • Networking (e.g. Cisco devices)
    • Storage (e.g. NetApp)
    • Compute
    • Virtualization/Cloud software Infrastructure (e.g. VMware vSphere, Azure, AWS)

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • Ability to work as a member of a technical team to complete complex software and systems projects
  • A strong interest and curiosity in cybersecurity, software and IT related technologies
  • Ability to work part time while continuing to perform strongly in course work leading towards a cybersecurity, computer engineering/science or IT related degree. 

Required Education: 

  • Working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical discipline such as cybersecurity, computer engineering, computer science or information technology from an accredited college or university. 

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

Familiar to Intermediate knowledge of DNS: Authoritative vs. Recursive servers, SOA, NS, MX, A, and CNAME recordsFamiliar with Security Onion or SPLUNK: interface requirements, scalability landmines, Enterprise configurations (sensor and master). VMWare port properties and how they are tied to sensor ports and promiscuous modes.

Prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands.Interact with vendors/users/customers and developers to understand needs and operational requirements changes that will impact the production environment.

Ability to solve technical problems involving a variety of integrated software and hardware platforms.
Evaluate enterprise level network, compute, and storage solutions
Support the assembly and management of on prem servers in a data center environment

Special Requirements/Security Clearance

Please note that pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires U. S. Citizenship status with ability to obtain a SECRET to TOP SECRET security clearance.  Security Clearance requirements will be specified in the Government's Task Order.

Salary Range

Based on the roles, responsibilities, and requirements, the projected pay range for this position is:  $20.00-$25.00 per hour, 20 hours per week.

 

The annual base salary provided is a guideline for this position and is not a guarantee of compensation or salary. When extending an offer, CESI also considers other variables such as (but not limited to) work experience, education, training, skill set, internal peer equity, clearance level, and market conditions.
